Poland and Slovakia are calling on their allies to provide fighter jets to Ukraine. And they point out that they are ready to send their Soviet MiG-29 supersonic fighter jets to Kiev. If, however, they are part of an international coalition, AP reported.
For now, it remains unclear whether other Western backers of Ukraine are ready to take that step.
I think it’s time to make a decision. People in Ukraine are dying. We can really help them. This is what Slovak Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad wrote on Facebook yesterday, quoted by BTA.
Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Wednesday on CNN that Poland is ready to give Ukraine its MiGs in a coalition with other countries. Nad also said on Wednesday that he had discussed this with his Polish counterpart at a meeting in Sweden and both had agreed on the matter.
The Polish military ministry said in a statement that Warsaw is ready to hand over its MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine as part of an international coalition.
Ukraine has been pleading with the West for fighter jets to bolster its defenses in the war, now in its second year. Kiev received promises of tanks, some of which are already arriving. But for the time being, there are no signs that larger countries such as the US and Britain will agree to send fighter jets as well.
