Poland and the Czech Republic will start temporary checks at the border with Slovakia on Wednesday to stop illegal migration and smugglers. Slovak Prime Minister Ludovít Ódor warns of negative consequences that could arise if countries increase their border security.
The temporary controls of Poland and the Czech Republic will last at least until October 13. But according to the countries, the measures can also be extended.
Czech Interior Minister Vít Rakusan said on X that the countries have coordinated the checks. The Czech Republic will carry out random checks along the border. According to Rakusan, Poland will proceed similarly.
From Slovakia, illegal migrants often travel to Germany or other Western European countries. Poland started checking Slovak vehicles in some places last week in an attempt to stem the flow of migrants. Germany announced last week that it would also conduct stricter checks.
Temporary border controls are allowed in the Schengen area
Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia are part of the Schengen area. This means that residents of these countries can travel freely. That is why people are actually only checked at the outer borders of the zone.
But Schengen countries may introduce temporary controls if, for example, there is a serious threat to public order or public safety.
The Slovak government will meet on Wednesday. Then the country will respond to the border controls, says Prime Minister Ódor.
Ódor states that “migration needs a European solution at the external borders” and that negative consequences could arise if countries themselves become more secure at their borders.
