Poland: A Russian citizen was arrested in connection with the murder of Navalny’s associate – 2024-09-22 05:44:57

A Russian citizen suspected of masterminding the attack on Leonid Volkov, an exiled close associate of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, has been arrested in Poland, the National Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

Volkov suffered hammer injuries in the March 12 attack outside his home in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius. Two men suspected of involvement in the attack were arrested in April in Poland on a European Arrest Warrant issued by Lithuania.

“In the months that followed, more people were arrested. There are currently eight suspects under investigation, four of whom are subject to the preventive measure of temporary detention,” the Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

“The investigation is multi-faceted and concerns, among other things: attacks against Russian opposition figures linked to the Anti-Corruption Foundation, which was founded by Alexei Navalny. The process covers events that occurred both in Europe… and in South and North America,” the statement added.

Polish private radio station RMF FM reported that Polish authorities arrested a former lawyer of the late former oligarch Boris Berezovsky as part of an investigation related to attacks on Russian opposition figures.

The arrest of the lawyer, Anatoly B., as prosecutors refer to him, was earlier reported by independent Russian media.

Berezovsky, one of Russia’s most powerful figures in the 1990s, fell out with President Vladimir Putin and fled to London in 2000 where he was later granted political asylum.

The 67-year-old tycoon was found dead in March 2013 with a handkerchief tied around his neck in the bathroom of a luxury mansion near London. His family feared he might have been murdered by enemies in Russia, but British police and coroners concluded that Berezovsky had taken his own life.
