Nineteen people were injured today when a car plowed into a group of pedestrians and other vehicles in the center of Szczecin in northwestern Poland, local authorities said, ruling out a “terrorist act” scenario.
Among the injured are six children. Two of the injured are in critical condition, District Governor Adam Rudafsky told reporters.
The driver of the vehicle, who sped away after the accident, was arrested. He is a Polish citizen, resident of Szczecin, 33 years old.
“This is not a terrorist act,” assured Szczecin police spokesman Pavel Pankau. According to him, the 33-year-old crashed his car, a Ford Focus, into a group of people waiting for the tram in a large city square. Initial analyzes show that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Eyewitnesses said that the driver entered the square at high speed, the car veered off course, crossed the pedestrian crossing, climbed onto the sidewalk and tram tracks, dragging people away.
