A pop-up window appeared on the locked PC of a 68-year-old resident of Ludwigshafen on Sunday afternoon. This prompted him to call a phone number. The 68-year-old followed the request and called an alleged Microsoft employee. The fraudster asked the Ludwigshafen resident to install several programs on his PC, which allowed remote access. A total of EUR 4,000 was then booked to various accounts.

The Federal Office for Information Security provides the following tips on its website to protect yourself from such damage on a PC blocked/infected by malware:

1.First you should stop all activities on the affected system. In particular, you should refrain from entering important information, e.g. B. Bank details or passwords.

2.The next step is to try to clean the infection. You can use your smartphone or another PC to get information first. We have provided information on cleaning PCs, smartphones and other devices on our consumer pages. If in doubt, the device should be reset to the delivery status and then set up again. Also have your backups, which are carried out regularly at best, ready. It may be necessary to contact a service provider in your area.

3.Finally, you should also check the other devices on your network. In some cases, malware can copy itself and infect your other information technology.

On the website www.bsi.bund.de you will find this and other comprehensive information on this topic.

If you also have such a message on your PC, take a picture and report the incident to your police station.
