A 59-year-old from Ludwigshafen received a WhatsApp message on February 19, 2023, supposedly from her son. Bank details were sent to her on the pretext of wanting to buy a new laptop. The 59-year-old was already familiar with the scam and didn’t get involved.
Fraudsters had already tried to deceive the Ludwigshafen resident on February 2nd, 2023. During this first attempt at fraud, she received a text message, also allegedly from her son. Under the pretext that the son has a new number, the 59-year-old was asked to save the number and continue chatting on the WhatsApp platform. Before the scammers could ask for money, she met her son and the scam was exposed.
