POL-PDNW: Fraud via the messaging service

Police headquarters Neustadt / Weinstrasse

Wachenheim (ot)

A 66-year-old woman from the Bad Dürkheim district was the victim of a fraud on Monday. She was contacted by a previously unknown person via Whatsapp, who pretended to be her daughter and asked for a bank transfer of around 2,000 euros. The woman sent her off, believing she was helping her daughter. It was only when her daughter told her parents at a later time that her scam was exposed. The police are now investigating the fraud.

The police recommend:

Please be careful if you receive these or similar messages. Don’t transfer money without consulting your family. Contact them on the phone number you know or, if possible, in person! If in doubt, ask outside for help or contact the police and ask for advice! How to protect yourself from fraud via WhatsApp:

   - Wenn Sie von Ihnen bekannten Personen unter einer unbekannten
Nummer kontaktiert werden, speichern Sie die Nummer nicht
     automatisch ab.
   - Fragen Sie bei der Ihnen bekannten Person unter der alten Nummer
     nach.
   - Anfragen nach Geld über Whatsapp und andere Messenger sollten
immer misstrauisch machen und überprüft werden. -Informieren Sie
im Schadensfall auch umgehend Ihre Bank
   - Achten Sie auf die Sicherheitseinstellungen Ihres verwendeten
     Nachrichtendienstes.
