Twelve dispatchers from the fire brigade control centers in Mönchengladbach, Viersen and Krefeld visited the police control center in Mönchengladbach on Wednesday, March 9th, as part of their training course for control center dispatchers. The reason for the meeting was to get to know each other, but also to exchange information about the sometimes different work processes in the coordination of operations.

It’s not just firefighters and police officers who work in the field on a daily basis in a team – their control centers are also closely interlinked: in a large number of operations, there are tasks for both the police and the fire brigade to cope with. For example, in the case of operations in the traffic area, such as accidents or oil spills, fires or bodily injury offences, both control centers coordinate their respective forces on site. This means that the control centers are in daily telephone contact with each other. Since things often have to be done quickly, it is helpful to know each other and to know how each other works. The dispatchers – that’s what the operations coordinators are called – therefore meet from time to time to keep up to date with the latest news and to improve processes.

“Even when dealing with everyday operational situations, there are many points of contact between the two control centers every day,” says Rainer Bayer, Chief Police Inspector and Head of the Management and Situation Service at the Mönchengladbach Police Headquarters, to which the Mönchengladbach Police Operations Control Center belongs. “But we also work hand in hand in the context of special incidents, such as major damage situations, major events, demonstrations, bomb threats and so on. Regular meetings between the police and fire brigade are therefore very important to optimize the operational processes on both sides and to promote mutual understanding important. We take the time for detailed consultations and coordination processes so that everything is in place when things have to be done quickly in an emergency.”

At the meeting on Wednesday, at which the fire brigade was a guest in the premises of the management and situation service of the police headquarters in Mönchengladbach, the topics of “danger prevention”, “behaviour at the scene of action” and “self-protection” were in the foreground. At the meeting, improvement approaches for future joint operations were developed.

“The close and collegial cooperation and the regular exchange between the police and the fire brigade,” says EPHK Rainer Bayer, “contribute to the safety of the citizens of Mönchengladbach.” (jn)
