Lindlar (ots)
On Thursday (1 August), a senior citizen from Lindlar trusted a WhatsApp message that was supposedly from her son. Believing that she was sending money to her son, she transferred the money to the account of fraudsters. The 82-year-old had received a message from an unknown number. It said that her son’s cell phone was broken, which is why he would contact her using this new number. He also asked her to make two transfers for him, which the Lindlar woman did. It was only when she spoke to her son personally on the phone the next day that she realized that she had been taken in by fraudsters. The police advise never to respond to requests for money via messenger services, to stay calm and to ask relatives personally using the previously known contact details whether the number has actually been changed. You can find more information on how to prevent fraud via messenger services at the following link: https://www.polizei-beratung.de/themen-und-tipps/betrug/messenger/
