On Sunday, June 26th, 2022, the “Mainova IRONMAN European Championship 2022” will take place in Frankfurt am Main.

The long-distance triathlon consists of a 3.8 km swim, 182 km bike ride and a final marathon of 42.195 km. The event serves to qualify the athletes for the IRONMAN World Championship in Hawaii in October. The Mainova IRONMAN is also the European Triathlon Championships and the largest such event in Germany. In addition, the organizer is again offering two side events this year, the IRONMAN NightRun on June 23rd, 2022 and the IRONKIDS Frankfurt on June 25th, 2022 for the first time after the restrictions imposed by the CoVid pandemic.

The classic IRONMAN begins with the opening discipline “swimming” at the beach in Langener Waldsee. The “Cycling” discipline then begins directly in the area of the Langener Waldsee and leads over 182 km (two laps) through the districts of Offenbach, Main-Kinzig-Kreis, Wetterau, Groß-Gerau and the Hochtaunuskreis. The final discipline “running” over a marathon distance starts in the Mainkai area in Frankfurt am Main and leads over a total of four laps above and below the Main to the finish in the Römerberg area. Around 2800 participants from all over the world are expected at this year’s event. The first participants are already expected at around 2:20 p.m. in the finish area, in the Römerberg area. The last participants are expected to cross the finish line around 10:00 p.m.

Already in the period from Tuesday, June 21, 2022 to Monday, June 27, 2022, there will be traffic disruptions and roadblocks on Mainkai and Untermainkai streets due to construction and dismantling work.

From 3:00 a.m. on the day of the event there will be further extensive road closures in Frankfurt am Main and in the districts of Offenbach, Main-Kinzig-Kreis, Wetterau, Groß-Gerau and the Hochtaunuskreis. The necessary traffic measures in downtown Frankfurt extend into the late evening hours. This will also affect some parking garages in the city center, so that their accessibility and use will only be available to a limited extent. In addition, there may be restrictions in local passenger transport.

Information on the traffic situation can be found on the organizer’s website (https://www.ironman.com/im-frankfurt-course) or on the website of the City of Frankfurt am Main (https://frankfurt.de/themen/sport/sportevents/mainova-ironman-european-championship-frankfurt). The traffiQ website (https://www.traffiq.de/) and the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund RMV (https://www.rmv.de/c/de/start/frankfurt).

You can find information about traffic restrictions and safety on our well-known social media channels.

On the occasion of the “Mainova IRONMAN European Championship 2022”, the Frankfurt police advise drivers to avoid the city center as far as possible. Due to the course of the “Cycling” discipline on Friedberger Landstraße (from the city limits to the city centre), a transport connection to the parts of the city east and west of Friedberger Landstraße is only possible by detouring via the federal motorway 661. The police would like to point out that destinations such as the Frankfurt Zoo cannot be approached through the city center and asks all road users to obtain information about the traffic restrictions before starting their journey.

The use of public transport is recommended for moving around the city.

We wish all participants a successful triathlon!
