The Bonn police department responsible for fraud offenses, Criminal Investigation Office 24, also records an increasing number of cases of telephone fraud, in particular fraudulent tactics via the “Whatsapp” messaging service.
“Hi mom, my phone is broken and I have a new number …!” – messenger messages from scammers who want to cheat with this scam similar to the well-known “nephew’s trick” start like this or something similar.
The perpetrators then quickly ask their victims to transfer money to someone else’s account, as their online banking fails due to the new mobile phone. Of course combined with the promise to repay the borrowed money very quickly. Since this is definitely a matter of life circumstances and the relatives to whom it has been written may want to help quickly and easily, a harmful event can occur quickly.
In recent weeks, the Bonn police have been increasingly reported to the police.
The police advise caution: do you think you would not fall in it? Perhaps. Maybe your parents or grandparents, friends or acquaintances. Therefore we turn to you: warn people close to you about this scam!
How to protect yourself:
If you are a victim:
