Pokémon Red Y Blue saw the light for the first time on February 27, 1996 for the portable console of Nintendo, Game Boy. The role-playing game (RPG) takes place in a fantastic world full of creatures with impressive powers that live in harmony with humans.
The objective of the game is to become champion of the Pokémon League and defeat an evil organization called Team Rocket. Today, it is a cult franchise that encompasses video games, movies, an animated series, manga, card games, mobile applications, and endless articles.
1.- Satoshi Tajiri, father of Pokémon
He became a video game developer working on Nintendo projects, but his time came when they started developing Pokémon, a game that would have as a producer the very Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Super Mario Bros Y The Legend of Zelda. He creates his world from aspects of his childhood, because during his primary stage, one of his passions was hunting insects and collecting them.
2.- Creation of Game Freak
The company started as a video game fan club, where Satoshi Tajiri and Junichi Masuda were located. However, their love for consoles and fantastic worlds led them to develop Mendel Palace (Quinty in Japan) for the NES and Famicom in 1989. Seven years later, came the work that catapulted them into a prestigious studio: Pokémon.
3.-What does Pokémon mean
The word comes from the Anglicisms pocket (referring to the pocket) and monsters (‘monsters’), by which it simply means “pocket Monsters”, in reference to that they are carried comfortably in devices called Poké balls or Pokéballs.
4.- Card game and manga
The video game was accompanied by a deck and sleeves to complement the universe. Until today, both remain in force independently. The card game presents an alternative to enjoy the fighting, while the manga offer alternative and complementary stories.
5.- Pikachu
The main exponent of the franchise is Pikachu, an electric type pokémon that appeared in the first generation of video games and was chosen to accompany Ash in the anime. It became highly popular and had its own title: Pokémon Yellow. Today is the benchmark when we talk about the saga.
6.- Anime
Pokémon is one of the animations with the most chapters in history. In it we meet Ash Ketchum (Satoshi in the Japanese version), a young Palette Town trainer whose goal is to become a Pokémon Master. In his adventures he has met endearing characters such as Gary, Professor Oak, Misty, Brook, Tracey, May, Dawn, Max and Serena.
7.-¿Ash y Gary?
The names of two of the most important characters in the anime changed when they left Japan, but the originals were Satoshi for Ash, for their creator; and Shigeru of Gary Oak (or Blue), as a tribute to Miyamoto, producer of the first titles.
8.- Porygon and the censored chapter
Porygon It is a unique pokémon, as it represents technology and its evolutions are inspired by its advances. However, it only appeared once in the anime: chapter 38 of the first season that was broadcast only in Japan, but it caused sickness, burning eyes and even epileptic seizures, for which at least 700 people had to be hospitalized. Afterwards, the species and its evolutionary line did not appear again on television.
9.- Are there animals in the Pokémon world?
The first season of the anime has peculiarities for being a stage of experimentation. In it, animals appear on several occasions (a mongoose, fish, a dog, among others) and Ash, the protagonist, comes out dressed as a cow in another episode. Over time, their presence as references in the Pokédex, as well as their appearance in anime in general, has been suppressed.
10.- Movies
So far, 22 anime-related movies have been released, featuring Ash as one of the leads, and a spinoff: Detective Pikachu, released in 2019, which starred Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds. The latter is inspired by the homonymous video game for the Nintendo 3DS.
11.- ¿150 Pokémon?
The dream of an entire generation became to catch the first 150 Pokémon, a true odyssey. However, they soon learned that there were indeed 151, with the inclusion of Mew. Over time, many others have been added and today 898 different species are counted according to official data.
12.- Water, fire or plant?
In the video game, new trainers choose a Pokémon from three types: grass, fire, or water. In the initial versions, they were Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle, three of the best known creatures in the universe. Depending on the region, they change for another shortlist, but they are always of these types.
13.- Type table
Something that every Pokémon trainer should master is the type table. Each Pokémon belongs to one or two of the 18 elemental types: Steel, Water, Bug, Dragon, Electric, Ghost, Fire, Fairy, Ice, Fighting, Normal, Plant, Psychic, Rock, Sinister, Earth, Poison, and Flying; none is more powerful than another, they have their strengths and weaknesses. Likewise, each attack by itself is of some kind.
14.- Regions
So far there are eight regions in the Pokémon universe, each one, emerged with a new generation of Pokémon, video games and anime: Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova (Tseselia), Kalos, Alola and Galar.
15.- Pokémon mythology
The creation of this universe is explained by means of the legendary Pokémon. Arceusaccording to the Pokédex, “it emerged from an egg and then created the whole world.” Each region has its Legends and Legendary Pokémon major and minor.
16.- Poké Ball or Pokébolas
Devices that work to catch and store a pokémon and carry it in your pocket. Depending on the type of Poké Ball, it can have a better effect when shooting. Trainers can only carry 6 creatures with them, so they must choose their best companions well. The rest of them remain on your PC, waiting to be called to adventure.
17.-Rivalry
One of the fundamental values in the structure of the games is rivalry: like Ash with Gary and Red with Blue, each protagonist has a rival, against whom he must prove that he is a better Pokémon trainer, although deep down they can be great friends .
18.- Friendship
Another fundamental aspect that Pokémon promotes is friendship. In addition to what trainers have, the bond with creatures can have positive effects in combat, in the development of the game and even to help some species evolve.
19.-Evolution
Evolution is one of the main aspects of the game. An evolved Pokémon tends to be much stronger than one that hasn’t. There are different ways to evolve: the most common is by the level of the Pokémon, but they can also do it by friendship, by evolutionary stone, depending on whether it is day or night, among other methods.
20.- Eevee
One of the best exponents of evolution is Eevee. In the first generation, Eevee was able to evolve into Flareon (fire), Vaporeon (water) or Jolteon (electric), depending on the stone used; but over time, he has obtained the evolutions to Umbreon (sinister), Espeon (psychic) Glaceon (ice), Leafeon (plant) and Sylveon (fairy), with various evolutionary methods.
21.- Pokédex
Device in which the trainers register the species of Pokémon that are found during their travels. One of the purposes of the game is to capture all the species that exist in the Pokedex. For each region there is one, in addition to a national one, where all the species known at the time are.
22.- Myths around the game
The first generation embodied many of the most popular myths surrounding the franchise: the truck in Carmine City that Mew would appear in, a possible battle against Professor Oak, that Lavender Town’s music caused depression, among others. Some turned out to be true, while others simply remained urban legends.
23.-Pokémon GO
In 2016 we met Pokémon GO, an augmented reality game for mobile devices. This one brought the franchise closer to the public, as it allows you to catch creatures while walking down the street. Has compatibility with versions Let’s Go Pikachu Y Let’s Go Eevee para Nintendo Switch.

Pokémon celebrates its 25 years in style
As part of its celebration for the 25th anniversary of the launch of Pokémon Green and Red, the company organizes a series of events, both in its video games and outside of them. They also announced, through Pokémon Presents, the titles that will come out to complement an anniversary as it should.
Within games, there will be limited-time events at Pokémon Sword and Shield (Nintendo Switch), Pokémon Café Mix (iOS, Android y Nintendo Switch), Pokémon GO (iOS and Android) and Pokémon Masters EX (iOS and Android).
Outside of them, we can listen to rapper Post Malone, who will perform in a special performance for the anniversary of Pokémon through YouTube, Twitch and Pokemon.com/25 from 6:00 p.m. in Mexico City this February 27 .
However, the ‘highlight’ are the upcoming games to release, where New Pokémon Snap It will arrive on April 4 of this year. On the other hand, Shiny Diamond Pokémon Y Shimmering Pearl, remakes of the original Sinnoh games, will be released in late 2021. Pokémon Legends: Arceus was the big reveal of the event, as it will test a new gameplay and experience in the universe.
