Undeclared, invisible, free, voluntary work, domestic work, living work… So many forms that go beyond the legal framework and that can be grouped together under the term informal work. It is all these forms of work, located outside wage labor, which will be at the heart of the 14e festival edition Film the workfrom February 17 to 26, in Poitiers.
“The work of women will be very represented”
“The idea is to explore all the richness and complexity of this informal work through different events, throughout the week, explains Maïté Peltier, general delegate of the festival. The work of women will be strongly represented in this edition, as will the work of young people. »
At the opening of the festival, Friday February 17, at 8 p.m., at Tap Castille, Poitevin film lovers will be able to discover Case, by Lotfy Nathan, the story of a young Tunisian who survives thanks to oil smuggling. The film was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, but had not been screened in Poitiers so far.
The closing movie Polaris, by Ainara Vera, was also presented on the Croisette last year. This story of a woman boat captain in the Arctic will be screened on Saturday, February 25, at 8:45 p.m., at Tap Castille. “We wanted to go to sea to close this edition, explains Maïté Peltier. Hayat recounts his difficulties in a profession rather reserved for men. »
Previews, workshops, meetings
Between these two dates, many events will punctuate the festival. There will be previews at Tap Castille: The Devil’s Mine, about a young Peruvian working in a gold mine (Monday 20, at 8.30 pm); Or Goutte d’orby Clément Cogitore, on a clairvoyance business in Paris (Saturday 25, at 4 p.m.).

Tributes to Godard and Honigman
The traditional retrospective concocted by film historian Federico Rossin will feature works by Ken Loach, Jerzy Skolimowski, Gus Van Sant, but also rare works by two German feminist filmmakers or a selection of restored African films. Two tributes to recently deceased filmmakers, Jean-Luc Godard and Heddy Honigman, are also on the program.
“We have forged new partnerships, underlines the general delegate of the festival. The exhibition African Workplaces, presented at the Espace Mendès-France, was staged with the Institut des Afriques in Bordeaux. And a partnership with the Meta will make it possible to discover the show Etienne A., at the Student House, on an Amazon employee in the Loiret who dreams of a new life. We also have several appointments with the university’s Migrinter laboratory. »
Two new prizes are also appearing: the Student Jury Prize (the winner of which will benefit from a screening at the Le Dietrich cinema in April) and the Jury Prize for social energy activities. As for the usual study day, it has been replaced by five “Crossed Views” on different themes.
“This will be an important editionconcludes Maïté Peltier, because we haven’t had a really normal edition since 2020. It’s the return of friendly moments and real times of sharing. »
