Poitiers feminists call for a rally to denounce feminicides

Not one more! In Poitiers, the March 8 collective calls for a rally this Friday July 16 at 6 p.m. in front of Notre-Dame de Poitiers. It’s about saying stop to feminicides. This action comes after the discovery of two bodies of women, almost in quick succession, at the beginning of July in Poitiers and Buxerolles. The first victim is a sexagenarian from the Bel-Air La Blaiserie district. She was found dead on July 4 in her apartment. Her husband, already convicted of domestic violence, was indicted for murder. And was remanded in custody in Vivonne prison. The other victim was discovered in Buxerolles four days later, on July 8.

“We do not forget them” states the collective’s press release of March 8, which also recalls that this year 2021, at least 63 women and gender minorities were murdered in France by their spouse or ex-spouse. For this feminist group, the political and legal response remains more than insufficient. “No effective government action plan has been put in place since the Grenelle of patriarchal violence organized by Marlène Schiappa”. However, this struggle involves real measures.

Deaths that can be avoided

The collective of March 8 denounces the lack of human and financial resources, but also the lack of training for the reception of victims. In his press release, he invites the Poitevins to come parade with their rage, signs and songs so as not to forget Françoise and Virginie, the last two victims of Poitiers and Buxerolles. Nor do the dozens of other women already killed this year.

“We recall that without financial means, without a real policy to fight against violence against women, in particular sexuality education, we will be condemned to count our deaths.”

For Pictavian feminists, it is above all a matter of changing each other’s outlook, of changing the laws and their application.
