Nine people have needed medical treatment due to poisoning after eating spinach in Australia sold by a local supermarket chain. The authorities have urged people not to eat the purchased product, but to throw it away.
These are spinach from the Australian producer Riviera Farms, whose expiry date is exactly today, Friday 16 December. According to the New South Wales authorities, a one kilogram pack of vegetables could be contaminated.
The Health Ministry said spinach can cause severe symptoms of poisoning, including delirium, hallucinations, blurred vision and fever.
Riviera Farms has also advised its business partners to pull the spinach in question from shelves, but the company says its other products are non-toxic. According to the company, some herb may have been mixed into the spinach.
