About sixty schoolgirls in northern Afghanistan have been admitted to hospitals. This happened after they were poisoned by people who broke into the school and bombarded classrooms with a toxic substance.
According to the police, the victims are now doing well. No announcements have been made about the nature of the poison or the perpetrators.
The attack on the girls’ school was in Sancharak district, about 275 kilometers northwest of the capital Kabul.
In neighboring Iran, an estimated 13,000 female students have fallen ill since November due to poison attacks on educational institutions.
Since the Taliban’s Sunni extremists took control of the entire country in 2021, women have been virtually excluded from secondary and higher education. There are still primary schools for girls.
The current rulers have said that in the long run they are in favor of secondary education for women “under certain conditions”.
