Paul Pogba went through the dust on Sunday evening after Manchester United’s 0-1 defeat against Arsenal in the Premier League. The midfielder caused a penalty kick, making ‘The Gunners’ a league win at Old Trafford for the first time in 14 years.
27-year-old Pogba tapped right back Héctor Bellerín in the penalty area, after which referee Michael Dean pointed to the spot twenty minutes before time. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made no error of 11 meters and gave Arsenal the win.
“I was a little out of breath, so maybe that was the cause of my stupid mistake,” a balding Pogba told BBC. “I felt I hit him and that we were in the penalty area. This should never have happened to me.”
It was the third time that Pogba caused a penalty at United since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as manager of ‘The Red Devils’ in December 2018. “Defensively I am not yet top in the penalty area and I have to work on that. We all have to play much better, but it starts with me”, Pogba emphasized.
It was the third time in the last four league games that United were without a victory in the Premier League. The team of Donny van de Beek is now nine points behind leader Liverpool, with one game less played.
“Everything indicated that our match against Arsenal would end in 0-0”, Solskjaer was disappointed. “Paul feels responsible for the defeat and that is quite right. He knows that he could and should have performed better.”
