September 30 at 18.00 Ojārs Vācietis Museum in Riga, Ojāra Vācieša Street 19, invites to a conversation evening “Poetry that is read or torn. Ojārs Vācietis and Children’s Literature ”, which takes place in the cycle of events“ German and Time ”. In the evening, poetess, writer, author and editor of children’s books Inese Zandere will visit, the organizers of the event informed in a press release.
In addition to poetry for adults, Ojārs Vācietis has also written poems for children. Many of them have stepped out of the book – both those who have turned into songs with Imants Kalniņš’s music and come to life in the animated film “Kabata” (1983) directed by Roze Stiebra, and the thrilling “You Are” sung and whispered by almost every student choir. The heroes of Ojārs Vācietis’ children’s poems are known as big and small – a sparrow that lost a sister, a fly that did not know what a shower is, a terrible Schlopster-Klopster that bites a gap for the Moon, and others. Many of them have been introduced to children from abroad in Latvia.
According to Ojārs Vācietis, writing poetry for children is a big responsibility. He has closely followed what is happening in Latvian and world children’s poetry, analyzed, thought through, criticized and acknowledged that we are good. All this bridge was discussed during the talks with Inese Zander in the evening.
Inese Zandere (1958) is a Latvian poet, writer, author and editor of children’s books, has also worked in the newspapers Pionieris and Diena, and was one of the founders of the magazine Rīgas Laiks. Inese Zandere’s poetry is widely composed and used in animation films, she is the screenwriter of the popular animation series “Rags”, the librettist of Erik Esenwald’s opera “Walled” and other musically dramatic works. Inese Zandere has received the Ojārs Vācietis Literary Prize in Poetry, the Literature of the Year Award for the books “Inside and Out” and “The Black Snake Bakery”, the Jānis Baltvilks Prize in Children’s Literature, the Copyright Infinity Award, included in the IBBY Honorary Award For her contribution to literature and the magazine “Rīgas Laiks” she received the highest state award – the Order of the Three Stars (2008) and the Letter of Recognition of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia for outstanding contribution to Latvian literature, children’s literature and illustration in Latvia (2018).
