‘Poetry Days 2021’ will offer a diverse program

As “Delfi” organizers from the Latvian Writers’ Union inform, this year’s Poetry Day events with the motto “Poetry Lives” this year are expected to continue several traditions, as well as events with international guests, events for young audiences, performances and classical poetry readings.

The opening of the Poetry Days this year will take place together with the International Festival of Contemporary Art “Survival Kit 12 ”on September 3 at the Art Center“ Noass ”. Participate in the event with poetry readings Marija Luīze Melke, Andris Kalnozols, Ingmara Balode and Edvins Raups. The reading will be followed by the performance of Ieva Balode and Artūrs Puntes, as well as the disco of Solvita Kreses and Henrik Elias Zēgners.

The collaboration with Survival Kit 12 will also take place at the events of the Contemporary Culture Forum “White Night” on September 4 at the Eduards Smiļģis Theater Museum, where the traditional “Satori” poetry disco will take place alongside the performances of “Survival Kit 12”.

Both festivals will share several venues, for example, on September 8 and 12, the hotel “Neiburgs” will host performances “Poets in the Elevator” and “Poetic Aging Room”.

On September 5, the “Māra Zālīte Poetry Morning” is expected at the Riga Latvian Society House, but at 2 pm, after a break of several years, poetry will return to the Esplanade, where Liāna Langa, Inese Zandere, Jānis Rokpelnis, Juris Helds, Eduards Aivars and Guntars Godiņš will participate in classical poetry readings. The event will focus on expanding the poetry audience by providing sign language interpretation. Expanding the availability of “Poetry Days 2021” is possible with the support of the State Culture Capital Foundation’s target program “Culture Space”, within which several video reviews of the festival with subtitles in Latvian and English will be created.

In addition, Kārlis Vērdiņš, Ingmāra Balode, Raimonds Ķirķis, Marija Luīze Meļķe and other authors will take part in the event “Ūdensdzeja” at the marina in Ķīpsala on September 5.

This year, Poetry Days will honor Ulža Bērziņš’s memorial event “Metaphysical Poetry”.

During the Poetry Days this year, a new tradition will be established by the magazine “Domuzīme”, presenting the “Domuzīme Poze Award”. The award ceremony will take place on September 8 at the Ojārs Vācietis Memorial Museum.

An international sound will be introduced in the Poetry Days program by the “Baltic Poetry Evening” Siev. Dz ”at the Art Center“ Noass ”on September 9. Berita Kašana and Mārja Pertna from Estonia, Tautvīda Marcinkevičūte and Giedre Kazlauskaite from Lithuania will give readings.

During the Poetry Days, special attention is also paid to young people – on September 10, Rainis and Aspazija’s house will host an event “Fold with the poet”, where students will be invited to meet young poets Loti Vilma Vītiņš, Kirils Ēce and Marija Luīze Melķis.

On September 11, the traditional “Journey with Poets” in the vicinity of Ganību dam is expected. Madara Gruntmane, Henriks Elias Zēgners, Ivars Šteinbergs, Toms Treibergs, Artis Ostups, Inga Gaile, Anna Auziņa, Artūrs Punte and Marija Luīze Melke will take part in the march.

At the end of the Poetry Days at the Ojārs Vācietis Memorial Museum on September 12, the authors nominated for the Poetry Days Award will host readings and awards, Inga Gaile, Ingmāra Balode, Ivars Šteinbergs and Amanda Aizpuriete will perform. Edgars Šubrovskis will play music at the event.

All activities will be conducted in accordance with current epidemiological safety regulations.
