Podcast The Day: the dichotomy down under

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrisson tried to strike a cheerful tone this weekend, because after more than a year and a half of extremely strict corona measures, the borders will open further. Foreign students and workers are welcome again under certain conditions. But as the country moves further and further from the lockdown, protests are growing. The freedoms only apply to vaccinated people and, say the tens of thousands of demonstrators who have taken to the streets every weekend for weeks, the states are drawing far too much power to themselves. Especially the state prime minister of Victoria, where Melbourne is located, has to suffer.

Correspondent Meike Wijers explains in podcast De Dag how a dichotomy has arisen between vaccinated and unvaccinated Australians and how resistance is also developing among the large group of vaccinated people against the federal states, which do not always keep their word.

She says the pandemic has taught Australians a lesson in governance that is leading to social and political tensions.
