Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon makes no mistake about it: she wants to lead Scotland to a second referendum on Scotland’s independence this year. In the first referendum in 2014, 55 percent of Scots voted against independence, but now they are Brexit and a pandemic further and 53 percent are in favor of splitting. In the run-up to the Scottish elections in May, Sturgeon is increasing the pressure. There is momentum and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is starting to get nervous.

Sturgeon is immensely popular in Scotland and saw her star rise further during the corona crisis. She is sober and serious, and she is praised for not shy away from taking difficult measures. She also openly opposes Johnson, who is her opposite in everything. It poses the question of whether Scots might be better off as an independent country with Sturgeon at the helm.
