The history of the city of Hall in Tyrol has been closely linked to salt mining for centuries, the so-called “white gold” that shaped the region. But what remains of this story today?
HALL. Felix Pik, a native of Hall, set out to discover the salt and his discoveries. He found what he was looking for – in many places: up in the Halltal, where industrial activity once flourished, where the mansion and other historic buildings are a modern reminder of salt mining. In the old town of Hall in the mining museum, but also in the Absam community museum, the history of the salt miners comes alive. Finally, at the University of Innsbruck, historians and geologists are researching the legends surrounding the Haller Salzberg and investigating which of them are true. And in the Haller Lend, where brine is used again today, you can see the “white treasure” of yesterday.
What remains
Pik’s journey leads to the Tyrolean G’ movement of industry that has had a profound effect on the country. It is about welfare, the spirit of the subjects, the use – and perhaps overuse – of natural resources, as well as pioneering achievements and their impact on modern life in Hall and the surrounding area. a tour What can still be found in the area today shows how much salt has shaped history and daily life over the centuries.
