Jakarta –
The Netherlands is currently experiencing a significant increase in pneumonia cases in children. Making it the second country to report a pneumonia outbreak besides China.
The Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research (NIVEL), a research institute in Utrecht, reported that 80 out of every 100,000 children aged between 5 and 14 had pneumonia in the last week.
Quoted from The Messenger, this is the largest pneumonia outbreak that NIVEL has recorded in recent years. At the peak of the 2022 flu season, when pneumonia cases are most common, there were 60 cases recorded for every 100,000 children in that age group.

Neither NIVEL nor the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment could provide an explanation for the increase in pneumonia cases.
Previously, ‘mysterious’ pneumonia cases in China also began to raise concerns. The first reports emerged last week that hospitals in Beijing and Liaoning province were overflowing with children arriving with pneumonia.
Chinese officials claimed to the World Health Organization (WHO) that no new pathogens had been detected in the outbreak. Instead, the disease is caused by seasonal viruses such as flu and RSV, as well as the bacteria mycoplasma pneumoniae.
The trigger is said to be strict COVID-related measures that will be lifted at the end of 2022, making people vulnerable to this annual virus. Now, during the first flu season since China’s strict COVID-19 lockdown was lifted, the population is being ‘ravaged’ by the disease that strikes every year.
On the other hand, COVID-related policies have not been implemented in the Netherlands for some time, so it is currently not clear what caused a similar spike in cases this year.
Some parties are concerned that officials in China are covering up the early stages of the epidemic or outbreak that occurred there. This is because the country has been widely criticized for its initial response to the discovery of COVID-19. Some people also see the current situation as a reflection of the past.
