Western countries believe that the Kremlin is using PMC Wagner, which the EU believes has close financial ties with longtime friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, in order to enable him to use undeniable leverage in foreign conflicts.
According to a senior EU official, who did not want to be named, EU sanctions against Wagner, three associated organizations and eight individuals will include a travel ban on the EU and a freeze on any assets held in the block.
The restrictions were passed just over a year after Brussels imposed sanctions on an alleged supporter of Yevgeny Prigozhin, a Russian caterer dubbed “Putin’s chef” for his close ties to the Kremlin.
