Kochi – The country’s first hydrogen fueled ferry will be delivered from Kochi to Varanasi next month. It will be taken to Varanasi after conducting more trial voyages under the leadership of Kochi Shipyard. Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually flagged off the aircraft at Tuticorin. During the flag-off ceremony, the Prime Minister said that the aircraft built at the Kochi Shipyard is Tamil Nadu’s gift to Varanasi.

Kochi Shipyard is one of the few countries in the world that have implemented hydrogen fueled ships. A boat made in Kochi is the answer to those who thought that such a thing cannot be developed in India and will have to be imported from outside. 99.996% pure hydrogen is used. Hydrogen is not currently commercially viable. But within a few years, hydrogen will become an alternative energy source. Therefore, India will have the upper hand as a beginner”, said Kochi Shipyard Chairman Madhu S. Nair after the ferry flag-off.

He said that Varanasi is the most prominent place in the country in terms of inland water transport and that is why the ship is being taken there. This aircraft has a capacity of 50 passengers and is AC equipped. The cost is Rs 14 crores. It took two years for the construction. But the technology including its software was developed by KPIT Technologies. This was done in collaboration with CISR, a central government agency.

The service can be conducted only if at least 5 vessels arrive. The Center hopes to soon convert three coastal towns into eco-friendly vehicles. Cities like Kochi, Kollam, Guwahati and Goa are being considered as part of this project. It has a 50 kW fuel cell. Efforts are underway to convert it into a 300 kW cell in the future.

The ferry is equipped with 5 cylinders that hold 40 kg of hydrogen. It can travel for eight hours. A 3 kilowatt solar panel is also installed in it. The technology is to produce electricity by reacting the hydrogen in the fuel cell with the oxygen in the air, and using this electricity to power the aircraft. There is no harm to the environment as water is a by-product. A hydrogen fueled aircraft will also produce no noise pollution.

Plans are also underway to make the country’s inland water transport system completely environment-friendly. Kerala will also be included in this. Plans are underway to launch 1000 ‘green water’ vehicles, including electric ones. Madhu S. said that Cochin Shipyard can play an important role in this. Nair said.
