Pluto’s Controversial Demotion to Dwarf Planet Status

SPACE — Pluto suffered a sad fate on August 24, 2006. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has decided that Pluto is no longer a planet. By contrast, Pluto is now officially classified as a dwarf planet along with the other four known dwarf planets in the solar system.

This decision sparked worldwide outrage, and the controversy still continues today. Astronomers who support Pluto’s demotion argue that a planet should have already cleared its orbit around the sun.

Pluto and the more distant dwarf planets fail to meet this criterion. If Pluto is to maintain its planetary status, it will also need to be classified as a planet. While astronomers continue to debate this new definition, society is uniting to defend Pluto’s title.

For now, Pluto should be king of the dwarf planets. Of course that’s pretty cool and can cheer him up a bit. Source: Space.com
