The government is developing coal gasification (Dimethyl Ether/DME) to meet the energy needs of society. Its existence is expected to be an alternative energy to replace Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG).
Energy and Mining Observer Fahmy Radhi said DME is a processed product or processing from coal which can suppress LPG imports. The reason is, Indonesia has been known as one of the countries in the world that produces the largest coal.
“Plus, DME is clean energy that converts coal energy which is abundantly available in Indonesia. DME can replace LPG, which imports are very high,” said Fahmy to detikcom, Sunday (11/14/2021).
To note, the increasing use and consumption of energy in the community makes LPG imports unavoidable. The government noted that Indonesia imports 5.5 to 6 million LPG per year.
Therefore, the government is making efforts to encourage industrial downstreaming. Low-calorie coal will be processed through the coal gasification process into DME which is planned to replace LPG for household needs.
Advantages of DME the other is on environmental impact. DME is considered easy to decompose in the air so it does not damage ozone and minimizes greenhouse gases by up to 20%. If LPG per year produces 930 kg CO2 emissions, later with DME the calculation will be reduced to 745 kg CO2.
“These values are very good in line with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dadan Kusdiana in his official statement.
