Plug from Popcorn Time: the app that Netflix was afraid of

The makers of Popcorn Time announced in an email to media today that the illegal streaming service has been discontinued. The reason has not been disclosed.

A few years ago, Netflix warned about the rise of Popcorn Time in a financial report. “Piracy remains one of our biggest competitors,” Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings said in 2015.

Popcorn Time was introduced in 2014 and within a year it became one of the most popular ways to illegally access movies, among other things.

The software made it possible with links for users to share movies or series with each other. The first makers left the service shortly after its launch, but the app’s code was available to other developers and those released new versions.

The Pirate Bay

Movie piracy is still a problem for Hollywood. That has become worse during the corona pandemic as cinemas were temporarily closed due to lockdown measures and films were released directly on streaming services. Movie studios regularly file lawsuits against websites and apps that allow illegal downloading or viewing of movies, such as Popcorn Time and The Pirate Bay.

The Pirate Bay is still active, but Dutch providers have to protracted lawsuit block access to the site since 2020. Since then, the visit to the illegal download site in our country collapsed.
