Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The domestic state-owned electricity company, namely PT PLN (Persero), revealed that the Suralaya 1-4 coal-fired steam power plant (PLTU) located in Cilegon, Banten, which has been operating since the late 80s, is claimed to have not yet reached its economic life limit.

PLN Executive Vice President Energy Transition and Sustainability, Kamia Handayani, said that PLTU Suralaya had undergone an asset re-evaluation which extended the life of the plant so that it could continue operating.

He said that the PLTU had undergone modifications to the boiler or a device that converts water into steam, which had been carried out since before the energy transition program was intensified in the country.

“Suralaya underwent an asset re-evaluation and wasextend too right lifetime-his. So before we talk about energy transition, we still need energy. It (PLTU Suralaya) extended its lifetime with di-retrophsso the boiler was replaced,” explained Kamia when met on the sidelines of the Renewable Energy and Climate Summit Indonesia-the Netherlands, Jakarta, quoted on Tuesday (10/10/2023).

Meanwhile, after the energy transition program to cleaner energy in Indonesia was intensified, Kamia claimed that his party was still unable to retire the Suralaya PLTU which had been evaluated so that its life could be extended.

He said that decommissioning the PLTU would increase the company’s cost burden. “There are significant costs, right? Because we rushed to invest in the extension, right, because we were replacing the boiler, replacing that,” he added.

As is known, PLTU Suralaya 1-4 was temporarily shut down due to the Jabodetabek pollution issue. Previously, the Main Director of PLN Indonesia Power, Edwin Nugraha Putra, said that his party had also made various efforts to continue to reduce emissions from its generator operations.

Edwin explained that PLTU Suralaya has been equipped with Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) technology which will filter combustion dust down to the smallest size under 2 micrometers.

“On the emissions monitoring side, PLTU Suralaya has been equipped with a Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS) to ensure exhaust gas emissions from operations remain below the specified threshold. Here you can see, PLN has implemented a digital system to manage all our plants. Monitoring system “The generator makes operations more effective and efficient,” said Edwin in a press release, quoted on Wednesday (6/9/2023).

He said that the operations of PLTU Suralaya had met the quality standards set by the government. His party even reduced the operation of the PLTU when it was initially called a contributor to Jakarta’s pollution.

“Since August 28, PLN has reduced the operations of the Suralaya PLTU by 4 units or 1,600 Megawatts (MW) but we know that pollution in Jakarta is actually getting higher,” he said.

As is known, the Suralaya 1, 2, 3 and 4 coal-fired power plants located in Cilegon, Banten Province have a large capacity, namely each having a capacity of 400 Mega Watt (MW). So the total power plant will be 1,600 MW.

This coal-fired power plant is operated by a subsidiary of PT PLN (Persero), namely PT Indonesia Power (IP).
