Plovdiv Municipal Council Considers Removal of Alyosha Monument and Transformation of City Space

Also on the agenda of Plovdiv is the removal of a monument – that of Alyosha. “There should be a transformation of the space. However, how to transform this space is a matter of debate among the people of Plovdiv,” Veselina Alexandrova, municipal councilor from DB, told BNR.

In parallel, the legal and technical possibilities for this to happen will be examined, she explained. “It has also been a polar issue in Plovdiv for years. That’s why some call these actions late. All politicians do not raise this topic during elections,” Alexandrova commented.

According to her, Alyosha symbolizes the disunity in the city under the hills, which is actually a multi-ethnic city of tolerance. The municipal councilor believes that this cannot be the symbol of Plovdiv and occupy the highest place in the city.

All the changes that happen abruptly always divide people, Veselina Alexandrova stressed. Therefore, according to her, the debates should happen more slowly.

“We are not categorically talking about dismantling. We are talking about the transformation of the space. Over the years, there have been various ideas about what could happen in Alyosha’s place. There are ideas about changing the statue so that it depicts Vasil Levski.”

“There are data, there are rumors, it is said that it has been declared a monument of national importance and that the ownership is state-owned, which already slightly distorts the competent authority, which has to make a decision,” Alexandrova also stated.
