Plextor Brand Officially Closed, Redirects to SSSTC – Kioxia Announcement

Plextor was founded under the name Texel in 1985 as a subsidiary of the Japanese company Shinano. He became famous thanks to his optical disc readers and subsequently especially his burners (I had one at home at the time, author’s note).

In 2010, the brand was licensed to competitor Lite-On, and Plextor “changed nationality” from Japanese to Taiwanese. In 2019, it was bought by Kioxia (originally Toshiba Memory). Plextor brand SSDs relied on Marvell controllers and according to some sources this made them uncompetitive.

It will offer SSDs for data centers under the SSSTC brand, and for end users under its own Kioxia brand. The website noticed the brand cancellation Tom’s Hardware. The official Kioxia report is not yet available, but Plextor’s website is already redirected to SSSTC.

The Plextor website will now only offer redirects
