/ world today news/ The “Washington Post” newspaper published a letter from seventeen European politicians who appealed to Donald Trump with a request to abandon improving relations with Russia. Among them is the President of Bulgaria, Rosen Plevneliev.
The former President of Estonia Tomas Hendrik Ilves, the former President of Romania Traian Basescu, the former President of Latvia Vaira Vike-Freiberga have signed.
The list of signatories also includes the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Carl Bildt, and other former leaders of the foreign and defense ministries of the Czech Republic, Poland, and Lithuania.
The letter warned the US president-elect not to lift anti-Russian sanctions and not make a “grand deal” with Moscow over Ukraine. “The consequences of such a deal would undermine America’s confidence in its allies in Europe and the world,” the authors say.
They also question the possibility of having trusting and friendly relations with Moscow. According to them, it is not Russia that is interested in America’s greatness, but America’s allies in Europe.
“When America used to call us, we responded. We were with you in Iraq and Afghanistan. Together we took risks, together we sacrificed sons and daughters. (…) When the USA is strong, we become stronger together”, the politicians say.
“We urge America’s friends to strengthen, not weaken, transatlantic ties,” the letter said.
“Maintaining good relations with Russia is a good thing. Only stupid people would think it’s a bad thing!” This is what the newly elected US President Donald Trump wrote earlier on Twitter. One of his promises is to seek to maintain good relations with Russia.
“When I’m president, Russia will respect us far more than it has before, and the two countries will probably work together to solve some of the world’s big and pressing problems,” Trump said earlier. /RIA-News
