Please keep your hands away from sports halls – letters to the publisher Breisgau

ACCOMMODATION FOR REFUGEES

Regarding the report on the use of the Kirchzarten sports hall as accommodation for refugees, BZ from 6, 8 and 10 September, a reader writes:

Yes, it is right to support refugees from Ukraine and provide shelter. Weeks ago it was clear that this terrible war will unfortunately continue. But the responsible authorities have nothing better to do than use the “hidden reserve”, it is scandalous. Instead of worrying about the timely provision of accommodation (Freiburg fair, housing containers, hotels), it was decided to use sports halls. My advice: close all schools immediately, so we have more than enough space. Yes, we can do online lessons. By the way: in 2015 we managed to provide shelters to refugees in a very short time. There has been enough time this year to expand capabilities.

It is clear that those who do not have a lobby in our society should take a step back. Children need exercise, which is why regular physical education classes at school help. Furthermore, it is urgent to maintain the offer of sports clubs. Due to the closure of sports halls during the pandemic, many children have become couch potatoes and have left sports clubs. We are aware of the health (physical and psychological) and social consequences. And what happens? We should provide sports halls, thank you very much. Dear politicians, you are making things too easy for yourself, please keep your hands off the sports halls. Children need sports at school and in clubs. Michael Gaide, Freiburg
