Many gamers of course want to enjoy the games released in 2023 and 2024, which so far, it must be admitted, are cool and charming. But on the other hand, it is a bit sad if we look at the whole video game as an industry. Apart from these cool games, we are met with a lot of bad news, from studio closures to mass layoffs, the total of which by 2024 will reach thousands. The reasons for restructuring and reorganization are jargon that is often thrown around. But who would have thought that this situation would also affect Sony Playstation.
As if it was his “last assignment”, Playstation boss Jim Ryan confirmed a mass layoff process for at least 900 Playstation employees worldwide, or around 8% of their total workforce. Playstation employees from all regions: America, EMEA, Japan, and APAC will be affected, with several Playstation Studios also affected.
Playstation will lay off around 900 employees from all regions and several studios, or around 8% of their total workforce.
Even for the UK in particular, Sony will close the entire Playstation Studios – London Studio and also reduce the total number of employees at Firesprite Studio. Jim Ryan admitted that he was saddened by this decision but called it essential to ensure that Playstation could continue to offer the best experience they could in the future.
This is of course a hard blow for the Playstation which so far seems to be “leading” the competition for the latest generation of consoles. Will these mass layoffs reduce the quality of Playstation games in the future, especially from first party studios? Let’s just wait.
