PlayStation Stars: Sony introduces new loyalty program

Sony has announced a new loyalty program for gamers who own a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5. The PlayStation Stars are intended to reward players for completing certain campaigns or actions. Participation in this bonus program is completely free of charge for you. Of course, pure altruism is not behind it. On the one hand, Sony wants to retain customers and guide them to PlayStation Plus and, on the other hand, increase the time they spend in front of the consoles.

As a reminder, Sony has just reformed PlayStation Plus with three new plans: PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra and Premium. And only those who have subscribed to PlayStation Plus will also automatically receive points for purchases in the PlayStation Store via PlayStation Stars. However, as indicated, there are other ways for you to earn loyalty points. For example, there should be a so-called “Monthly Check-In”. Playing any game is enough to earn points.

Other campaigns require you to win tournaments or earn specific trophies. Special rewards await if, for example, you are the first to unlock a platinum trophy in a specific game in your time zone. Participation in PlayStation Stars will according to Sony be free. The fresh loyalty program is to start “in the course of the year”. More details will surely follow in the coming months.

PlayStation Stars: Sonys Variante der Microsoft Rewards

The idea of such a loyalty program will seem all too familiar to Xbox owners: just as the new PlayStation Plus is inspired by Xbox Game Pass, Sony is essentially emulating Microsoft Rewards with PlayStation Stars. Which program turns out to be more advantageous in the end can only be said after the start. Sony promises points will be redeemed from a catalog that may include PSN credit and select PlayStation Store products.

Sony also offers “digital collectibles” as special rewards. These are digital images of, for example, characters from games and other entertainment formats and devices that reflect Sony’s history. This seems less interesting to us and sounds more like preparation for the integration of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens). However, opinions should simply differ on this.

Sony is currently testing the PlayStation Stars internally. Later in the year, the new loyalty program will be introduced in phases in individual regions. So when it will be in Germany, Austria and Switzerland is currently still open. Of course we will keep you up to date.
