Last May, Sony made known a new product which it called Project Q, seen as the new portable console of the Japanese company. Now, we have the official presentation of this product that will hit the market later this year as PlayStation Portal.
This will be a device that aims to give all players a freedom that until now did not exist. The concept is that they can play their games anywhere, taking their PlayStation 5 experience to the palm of their hand.
PlayStation Portal is a portable device designed for PS5 owners
We cannot look at PlayStation Portal as a portable console in the full sense of the word. Although it allows you to play games anywhere, you will not be able to play any games on this console.
PlayStation Portal will only run games that you already have installed on your PlayStation 5. This means that the cloud service included in PlayStation Plus Premium will not be supported by this product, nor will PS VR2 games.
In short, PlayStation Portal will function as an extension of PS5. It will serve to take your games to any room in the house, thus ceasing to be constantly tied to the place where the console is installed.
PlayStation Portal will work in locations where a Wi-Fi connection is available with speeds above 5 Mbps. However, Sony recommends a connection with speeds of at least 15 Mbps for a smooth, full gaming experience.
This portable device does not have a Bluetooth connection, it only has a Wi-Fi connection and PlayStation Link. The latter is Sony’s proprietary wireless technology that offers low latency for lossless audio quality and switching between compatible devices.
PlayStation Portal offers an 8-inch LCD screen
Looking at its specifications, some details are still unclear. However, Sony has confirmed the presence of an 8-inch LCD screen with Full-HD resolution and a refresh rate of 60 Hz.
For a product designed for the gaming segment, this refresh rate is a little lower than expected. Flanking the PlayStation Portal screen we have controllers with the same layout and features as the DualSense controller for the PS5.
Also note the presence of a USB-C input, the 3.5 mm jack and speakers positioned at the top. Other technical details of this product should be clarified in the future.
It only remains to inform you that PlayStation Portal will hit stores for € 219.99. Its availability will happen at the end of this year, still without a concrete date defined.
