Sony explains its plans for the next generation of gaming consoles.
It is in the ongoing feud between Sony and Microsoft, which is unfolding as part of the UK competition authority’s investigation into the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, that Sony is explaining its plans for the next generation of consoles of game.
Activision Blizzard is the company that publishes “Call of Duty” titles, exclusive to Sony Playstation, which was to be acquired by Microsoft. But Sony is against the acquisition. Because Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard would mean that the exclusivity of “Call of Duty” would go to Microsoft’s Xbox.
Microsoft says it wants to offer the series on Playstation consoles for as long as it “makes sense” and has offered Sony a contract through 2027, but Sony says Microsoft will likely make the series Xbox-exclusive after that.
When Sony launches the next generation of its Playstation console, it will lose access to “Call of Duty” and other Activision games, which could lead to making the next generation Playstation extremely vulnerable to losing consumers.
Sony says it will take many years and billions of dollars to create a game that can challenge “Call of Duty”, if they even have the ability and resources to do so. Sony believes that Electronic Arts’ “Battlefield” series is a sign that it’s not working and likely won’t be successful.
The existing generation of Playstation console from Sony, Playstation 5 debuted two years ago in 2020. While Playstation 4 was launched 7 years ago in 2013. Which makes it probable that Playstation 6 will be released in 2027 at the earliest but considering the previous seven year gap between Playstation 4 and Playstation 5.
When do you think the Playstation 6 will arrive?
