PlayStation 6 will have Ray Reconstruction and Generative AI, says rumor

The PlayStation 6 is appearing more and more in the rumor mill, and this Friday (01) the newest rumor states that Sony’s upcoming console will have a considerable leap in graphical performance. This is because, supposedly, it will have built-in Generative AI functionalities, as well as support for Ray Tracing Reconstruction, Path Tracing and other graphics technologies that are currently limited to high-end dedicated cards.

The PlayStation 5 is entering its 3rd year, and the life cycle of consoles has been up to 7 years. This way, the current generation would still have at least another 3 to 4 years to go, between Pro versions and other optimizations, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the final next-generation product was even more powerful.

Dynamic project evolutions

Despite projections, the arrival of Artificial Intelligence in consumer market products can accelerate development cycles in much smaller windows than those suggested by the pre-AI standard. This means that in 4 years the technologies embedded in compact systems could be much superior to those suggested today.

Rumors suggest that the current design of the next consoles already takes into account components such as GPUs with GDDR7 memories and PCIe interfaces with much higher buses. However, one of the focuses of the IT industry as a whole has been to facilitate performance scaling.

Even before the current moment of AI applied to more and more components, the Nintendo Switch 2 itself has undergone several design revisions in recent years until the final version that will supposedly arrive in 2024. Another rumor points out that Sony plans to use APUs with chiplets and packaging for the PlayStation 6.

In itself, this already considerably facilitates updates throughout development. With this, it is possible to replace specific components on a modular chip, without having to change the entire SoC, also opening the possibility for advanced technologies such as Ray Reconstruction and Path Tracing to easily be the standard, and not the top of the line, in the next generation of consoles.
