Mark Cerny, who is behind the design of the PlayStation 5, said in a video presentation:
“This is the most powerful console we’ve ever built,” PlayStation 5 designer Mark Cerny said in a video presentation.
The power comes at a cost, as the Pro edition is priced at a whopping 799 euros. According to Gamer.no, this may correspond to between NOK 8,000 and 9,000. In comparison, the recently launched PlayStation 5 Slim costs around NOK 6,000.
Some assignments also disappoint. The Pro model comes without a built-in disk drive, which must be purchased separately for somewhere between NOK 1,200 and 1,500, according to Gamer.
The fans respond strongly
Many have reacted negatively to the high price. News site The Verge has received over 400 comments from disgruntled players, and the tone is far from positive.
“950 euros including disk drive and stand. Fuck off, Sony! PS3 again?!”, writes one user.
Another says, “This is crazy. It’s almost $900 after tax, with a disk drive and a stand.”
Many share this opinion and question whether the Pro version is really worth it, especially when you have to pay extra for accessories like a disk drive and a stand.
Experts believe that sales can be challenging
Games journalist Paul Tamburro of PlayStation LifeStyle believes Sony has a tough job ahead of it. In a statement to the BBC, he says that many had hoped that the PlayStation 5 Pro would eliminate the difference between Performance and Fidelity modes, but that the console does not seem to be doing enough to justify the high price.
Tamburro says the lack of a disc drive and the fact that the console still only supports 60 FPS is disappointing for many. So he believes it could be challenging to convince existing PS5 owners to upgrade.
The PlayStation 5 was originally launched in 2020, but there were major delivery problems due to the covid pandemic. Sony has yet to comment on the growing criticism of the Pro version’s price point.
