RTL News spoke with three gamers who have had the PlayStation 5 (PS5) at home for a number of weeks. The official release date is today, but Sony had already made a number of game consoles available to influencers and journalists just a month ago.
‘Cool device’
Game expert Eric Bouwman from Bright is one of them and he cannot be ignored. His first game, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, he has already finished. “It’s a really cool device”, Eric beams.

He says that he plays an average of two hours a night. But when his girlfriend starts laughing in the background, he improves himself to “three in a night.” “The picture is smooth, you no longer have a loading screen and it plays really well. It’s much nicer and more exciting than older consoles.”
Not IKEA-proof
If he does have to mention a disadvantage, it is the size of the device. With a height of 39 centimeters, 26 centimeters depth and 10.4 centimeters wide, it is not ‘IKEA-proof’, says Eric.
Bastiaan Vroegop, tech and game journalist, also noticed this. When he received the PlayStation 5 a few weeks ago, he swapped TV furniture with his in-laws. “The older furniture is suitable for large speakers, and therefore also for this large console.”

The game journalist has turned his hobby into his job and tests many games. Similarly for the PS5. “In recent weeks I have sometimes played five hours a day for work. I hardly get around to relaxing gaming”, he laughs.
New controller
Like Eric, he has Spider-Man: Miles Morales but he also has the new one Sackboy tried (a game à la Mario) and of course Astro’s Playroom, he says. “That game is designed to get to know the new controller.”

Because a home, garden and kitchen controller is not included this time. This is because it is a controller with ‘haptic feedback and adaptive triggers’. In normal Dutch: a controller with more realistic vibrations.
Bastiaan: “For example, when it rains in the game, you feel small taps on your controller, as if drops fall on your hands. You are actually being fooled by your controller. That’s really cool.”
Better view
What also contributes to the gaming fun is the new quality image, says Eric. The PS5 works on screens with 4K resolution. “The image is really smooth and you no longer have loading screens in between. You are actually the viewer of a film of which you are the director.”

Jan Meijroos also thinks the games on the PS5 look incredibly good. Jan is one of the most experienced game journalists in the Netherlands and writes a lot about games and technology. “The loading times are also short and the new controller gives extra fun to play.”
Enthusiastic, but critical
“I am enthusiastic, but I am also critical of the games that are available for it now”, says Jan. “Those are okay, but it could have been better. A new device like this is a party, but in the end it’s all about the games you can play on it.”
These new games, such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales (Jan had finished it in less than 15 hours), or Assassin’s Creed Valhallalook a lot nicer than before, he says. “In addition, you are no longer looking at the eternal loading bars, you have a next generation controller and the device is a lot quieter.”

A critical point from Jan: almost all new games can also be played on the PlayStation 4 (PS4). “It actually misses one system-seller, like PS4 did. A new game gives a console a suction effect. And that is missing, now that the games can also be played on the older console. “
Conversely, most PS4 games can also be played on the new game console, which also saves an investment, says Bastiaan. That was different when the PlayStation 3 was succeeded by the PS4. “Not being able to play the PS3 games on the PS 4 has caused a lot of anger among gamers. can play. “
New games
Did you grab a presale in addition to a PlayStation 5? Don’t worry, says Jan. “The really big titles in terms of games don’t come until the year after launch. And it’s okay to wait. A lot of new games, including the launch games, are also available for the PS4 and sometimes also for the Xbox.” Bastiaan agrees. “Even if you still play the PS4, you now have a whole series of new games.”
