PlayStation 5 Detachable Disc Reader: Internet Connection and Compatibility Explained

There was a bit of concern last month when it emerged that installing the redesigned PlayStation 5’s detachable disc reader required an internet connection. Apparently the hardware only needs it to do a security check, because even installed disk readers can easily switch consoles.

Several users on YouTube have posted videos of themselves installing a previously paired disc drive on a new PlayStation 5. The console can easily register the new drive via an internet connection. Once registration is complete, it works without any problems, even during offline gameplay.

Note that the disc drive will refuse to read Blu-rays if you install the device without an internet connection. Because online registration does not take place, the PlayStation 5 will not recognize the disc reader.

The fact that the disk readers can simply be replaced alleviates a concern. For example, it was originally thought that the detachable disc drives would no longer work with other consoles after they were connected to the first PlayStation 5. However, the consoles treat the devices as a controller: once connected, they work without any problems.

The question is whether the process will continue to work if Sony’s servers ever go offline. Anyway, by then the publisher will probably have released a patch that will make the initial security check unnecessary.
