PlayStation 3 Still in Use with Nearly 2 Million Monthly Active Users as of February 2023

A new leaked slide from the Insomniac ransomware hack has revealed that the PlayStation 3 is still in use as of February 2023, with the console boasting nearly 2 million monthly active users. To be precise, according to the documents, 1.9 million players are still using the old console from 2006.

Additionally, according to the leak, PlayStation 5 had 37.1 million monthly active users. Considering that the console only reached the 40 million mark in July 2023, this connection rate is quite impressive. PlayStation 4 continued to lead the way, with 70.3 million players using the console as of early this year. There are a total of 107.5 million active PSN accounts when the three consoles are combined.

Obviously, since this slide is dated February 2023, this figure must have fluctuated wildly over the past few months, especially with the rise in PlayStation 5 sales.

The 2020 console hit several milestones this year, in addition to hitting the 40 million mark in the summer. Just recently, Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 had sold 50 million units as of December 9th.

Beyond the runaway success of the PS5, the PlayStation 3 retaining 2 million users on its 87 million sales 17 years after its release is an impressive achievement in itself. Considering the console had a rocky start to its life due to pricing issues, its staying power is a big win for Sony and PlayStation.
