Two other English substitutes, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, also failed from the white point before that.
Read the reactions of coaches and players from Italy and England:
Roberto Mancini, coach of Italy: “A quick goal caused us problems. But then we started to dominate. My players played fantastically, they were amazing. The title is significant for our entire country. ”
Gareth Southgate, England coach: “I am really disappointed to lose. We missed the last step. We win and we play together as a team. We trained the elevens, but they are lotteries. Sending Saku for the fifth penalty was my decision. ”
Gianluigi Donnarumma, goalkeeper of Italy and the best player of the tournament: “We have a beautiful dream come true. I don’t even know what to say. We have made history. We have a great team of players, yet few people trusted us before the championship. ”
Leonardo Bonucci, defender and author of the Italian goal: “It’s unbelievable that we really did it when I remember how we started the match. We must also thank the coach, this trophy belongs to all Italians. ”
Harry Kane, Captain of England: “The boys handed over everything on the playground. Playing on penalties is the worst feeling in the world. Otherwise, it was a fantastic tournament, we can be proud of ourselves. It hurts now and it will hurt for a long time to come. ”
