ANNOUNCEMENTS•
A nature camera in the Drents-Friese Wold has captured three wolf cubs playing. The images show the animals chewing on a branch, running and playing with each other.
The records date back to August of this year when the puppies were three months old. To ensure peace and prevent the risk of unrest from people, the images are only being released now.
Cave found
It is the offspring of the wolf couple that have been prowling southwest Drenthe for over a year. Hans Hasper, provincial coordinator of the Wolvenmeldpunt, after much research found the place where the parents leave the puppies when they go hunting. “It’s a quiet place in the woods where the puppies have to play for hours until the parents come back with the food,” he says. The images give Hasper a lot of information. He sees that the puppies are well fed and that they “look very healthy”. According to Hasper, they are already slightly older than their parents and have somewhat thicker fur.
It is not yet known whether the cubs will eventually create their own pack in Drenthe. According to Hasper, this can also happen in Germany.
Discussion
Not everyone is happy with the arrival of the puppies. The vets in Drenthe are very concerned about the many wolf attacks. They no longer find the situation tenable and have written earlier a fire letter.
The number of wolf attacks in Drenthe rose to a record high in August. 57 animals are then killed, including three calves and a pony. Fourteen animals were killed in Friesland that month.
Paintball gun lawsuit
There is also wolf resistance in Gelderland. A young wolf walks in De Hoge Veluwe National Park that would be too tame. On the pictures it can be seen that the wolf approaches people several times.
Since the end of October, law enforcement agencies have been allowed to shoot wolves with a paintball gun to scare them away. Fauna Protection disagreed and filed a lawsuit earlier this month.
Pending the verdict, the judge ruled on Wednesday that the province of Gelderland provisionally don’t shoot paintball guns about wolves. Today the matter will be discussed on the merits in court and it will be decided whether it is still allowed.
