The best field player in the Bundesliga does not come from serial champions FC Bayern, so after the second half of the 2021/22 season it is not serial winner Robert Lewandowski this time. The Pole received only 11.4 percent of the votes from his league colleagues, but still held second place ahead of Florian Wirtz (Leverkusen, 10.2 percent).
Messi and CR7 no longer in the top 5
The clear winner was Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku, with the 167 Bundesliga professionals seeing him as the clear number 1 with 42.5 percent. In their eyes, the best player in the world is also French, Karim Benzema from Champions League winners Real Madrid (44.9 percent) landed well ahead of another compatriot: Kylian Mbappé (PSG, 16.2 percent). Here Lewandowski was third (9.6 percent), while Lionel Messi (5.4) and Cristiano Ronaldo (4.8) are no longer in the top 5.
However, the participating players also took positions on more far-reaching issues than the performance of their colleagues, sometimes with even clearer results. 80.2 percent positioned themselves against changes to the game mode of the highest German league. 12.6 percent vote for the introduction of play-offs, 7.2 percent for a championship and promotion and relegation round.
Ex-players in the VAR teams
When it comes to VAR, a perennial subject of debate, 77.2 percent believe that ex-players and coaches should be given a role in the responsible teams because of their experience. The result of the vote on the Super League, which only 0.6 percent want, and on the discussed World Cup every two years, was even clearer. Here it was said by 97.6 percent of the players: no.
