Who is Ada Lovelace? Every time theater actress Katharina Kurschat asked friends and acquaintances, no one knew the answer. And that despite the fact that Lovelace is one of the most important scientists in history: she is considered the first female programmer in the world. At the age of 28, she wrote computer language for a machine that didn’t even exist yet, laying the foundation for computer science. Despite her work, she is hardly known: “She was simply forgotten in male-dominated historiography,” says Kurschat.

During the pandemic, the 25-year-old became more involved with Lovelace and began writing a play about her – it describes the life of the scientist, in which she had to prove herself again and again in a male-dominated world and whose work went unnoticed during her lifetime . “I want to memorialize her with the piece,” says Kurschat. She not only wrote the play, but also directed it. On stage she will play the role of Ada Lovelace herself. Kurschat, who has only been at the Theater Krefeld Mönchengladbach for a year, has put in a lot of work. “It was exhausting but a great experience. I think you could compare it to giving birth,” she says.
