Plastic particles found in our blood for the first time, health effects still unclear

The direct impact of plastic particles in our blood is still unclear for various reasons. Firstly, we do not yet know how much plastic we need in our blood for such harmful effects.

“Plastics can make us sick, but what we don’t know is how many particles we need in our blood to get those effects. We don’t know how many plastics we can ‘safely’ ingest”, says professor Jana Asselman of Ghent University, expert in the health effects of microplastics. Compare it with other harmful chemicals: for example, the World Health Organization and legislative bodies determine on the basis of scientific research how much particulate matter, PFOS, … you need to have in your blood for it to form a health risk.
