Plasma is scarce due to lack of donors

Hemotherapy. Hospital Hemotherapy

In February there was only one donation; it is used for seriously ill patients.

From the Regional Center for Hemotherapy they asked the population that recovered from COVID to do the title tests for the subsequent donation of plasma, which will help severely elderly patients. It is that since December they noticed a notable decrease in medical interviews with antibody titers. “In 2020 we had about a thousand potential donors, who went to their medical interviews. Of them, 35 percent were able to donate plasma, which was used for COVID patients in different stages of the disease,” said Gabriela Liendo, head of the Hemotherapy Center of the Province in NUEVA RIOJA.

“In December there was a notable decrease, to the point that January was critical, because we had practically no donations. Since February we began to work with a group of COE collaborators, who made personal calls to the recovered. Unfortunately there was only one donation in February, “he said.

“This Tuesday we will be making another donation. But it is very low. The idea is to have the plasma in stock for a probable second wave of the virus,” he added.

Beyond the critical situation, Liendo estimated that there is an interest in people. “But we must emphasize that this is of great help for the treatment of those who are most affected, in the elderly,” he said. Therefore, they carry out voluntary blood and plasma donation campaigns, with the aim of providing hematological supplies, including plasma, to health centers. The campaign is carried out within the framework of an agreement between the provincial government and the Capital Municipality.

“We work on periodic collections at different points to supply the entire province with heme components, plasma, platelets and red blood cells,” he said.
