For the good cause. From this Monday, October 17 and until November 6, the French Blood Establishment (EFS) launches its first campaign dedicated to the donation of plasma, a part of our precious blood for the preparation of some biomedicals, and still largely unknown to the general public.
For your information, plasma is the liquid part of the blood where blood cells (red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets) are suspended in the blood vessels. Contains albumin, coagulation factors and antibodies of great therapeutic interest for patients.

“Plasma donation is still largely unknown to the general public, as well as to our donors. For example, according to the Donor Experience Observatory, conducted in 2022, only 28% of donors know that plasma is used to make medicines. There is therefore a real pedagogical and communicative challenge to be met, “Cathy Bliem, Director General of Blood Transfusion, Therapies and Development at EFS, said in a press release.
A different method
When donating plasma, only the plasma is extracted from the donor’s blood. His red blood cells are returned.
This method, called “by apheresis”, allows you to collect two to three times more plasma than a blood donation. The sample lasts between forty-five minutes and an hour, to which it is necessary to add twenty minutes of snack.
To donate plasma, you must be in good health, be over 18 and under 65 and have two weeks between two plasma donations or a plasma donation and any other donations (whole blood or platelets).
