The PRI parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies unveiled this Tuesday a plaque in tribute to federal legislator Augusto Gómez Villanueva, dean of the Legislative Palace of San Lázaro and one of the oldest active politicians in the country.
At 3 p.m., the PRI deputies – led by their coordinator, Rubén Moreira, and the national leader of their party, Alejandro Moreno – met on the ground floor of Building H, where they unveiled the insignia recognizing Gómez Villanueva, who “with his commitment, will and responsibility has contributed to the strengthening of parliamentarism and democracy in Mexico.”
At the event, the president of the Board of Directors of the Chamber, Marcela Guerra, highlighted that Gómez Villanueva, originally from Aguascalientes, is “the son of a railroad worker, with an indigenous identity and who knew how to speak Zapotec,” so “probably from there “It emanated its attachment to the land, its nationalist culture and proclivity for social movements.”
Likewise, he highlighted that the honored legislator held the position of deputy for the first time in 1964, had an outstanding career in the agricultural sector and was ambassador to Italy and Nicaragua.
Gómez Villanueva also held the position of senator and head of the now defunct Secretariat of Agrarian Reform. It was also he who revealed that Luis Echeverría Álvarez would be the PRI candidate for the Presidency of the Republic in 1970.
When speaking, Gómez Villanueva – born in 1929 – highlighted that “a man who is 94 years old never imagined having lived so long” and knowing the great changes that have occurred in the country during all these decades.
The deputy pointed out that, after the PRI’s transition from being a “majority hegemonic party” to one that currently occupies a minority position, it continues to have serenity and an important voice in the face of “the intolerance and polarization of a party.” that temporarily occupies power, but that has nevertheless destroyed part of the history and institutions of Mexico.”
